Curtis takes first after third round of PGA

08/10/2008 - Bloomfield Hills Township, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ben Curtis, the 2003 British Open Champion, fired a two-under 68 Sunday morning to move into sole possession of the lead after the third round of the PGA Championship.

It took Curtis an extra day, but he finished 54 holes at two-under 208 at the South Course at Oakland Hills.

After sitting for almost five hours on Saturday before play was called, Curtis was one of eight players who had 36 holes on his docket for Sunday.

"It should be a lot of fun this afternoon," said Curtis. "I went to bed pretty early. It's gonna be a long day and you just have to stay patient."

The third round was completed well within the time period the PGA of America allotted to finish all play on Sunday. If there is bad weather Sunday, and there's a 40 percent chance in the forecast, the fourth Monday finish in the stroke-play era of the PGA Championship could be a reality.

Players are going off both the first and 10th tees in threesomes in the final round. The last threesome is scheduled to go out around 2:20 p.m. (et) and with a five-hour window of play, there is time allowed for a possible playoff.

Again, that is dependent on no weather stoppages on Sunday. The forecast calls for a chance of thunderstorms in the late afternoon, with a 40 percent chance of rain all afternoon.

Second-round leader J.B. Holmes bogeyed the last hole to fall out of a tie for first. He managed an even-par 70 in round three and is tied for second place with Henrik Stenson, who birdied 18 for a one-under 69. The pair is knotted at minus-one.

Reigning two-time British Open champion Padraig Harrington flew into contention Sunday morning. He posted a third-round, four-under 66 to move into a tie for fourth with the man he beat in a playoff last year at the British Open, Sergio Garcia (69), and Charlie Wi (71). The trio is knotted at one-over 211.

Andres Romero matched the Oakland Hills course record Saturday with a five- under 65. He shares seventh with first-round co-leader Jeev Milkha Singh, who carded a third-round, even-par 70. That pair is in at plus-two.

Camilo Villegas (67), Steve Flesch (70), Aaron Baddeley (71) and 2001 PGA Champion David Toms (72) are tied for ninth place at three-over-par 213.

Phil Mickelson, the 2005 PGA Champion, never got going Sunday morning. He faced a seven-foot eagle putt on the sixth hole when he returned in the morning, but only made birdie.

Mickelson rattled off back-to-back bogeys at the 10th and 11th. He parred out and finished 54 holes in a tie for 13th at four-over 214, six off the lead.

Super Bowl XLIV Odds

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.

Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds

With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.

That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.

Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.

After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.

The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
